Moving Overseas Guide – Taxes

International tax laws may differ from U.S. tax laws. You could have deductible moving expenses and your new income might be taxed. Before moving overseas, find out the tax laws in the country you’re moving to, and search for international tax treaties between the United States and your new country. Refer to these tips as a starting point:
  • U.S. citizens must report their total income on their income tax returns; moving overseas does not make you exempt from filing U.S. tax returns.
  • Working and living abroad may qualify you for tax deductions, so keep track of your moving expenses. Refer to the IRS Taxpayer Guide for more information on taxes for U.S. citizens moving overseas.
  • If you are moving overseas for business, ask about what taxes you are exempt from and non-exempt from.
